Book Review: Girl From Mars

Girl From Mars by Julie Cohen

The blurb: I, Philomena Desdemona Brown, do solemnly swear to forsake all romantic relationships. There. Do I really have to repeat it in Klingon?”

It’s not like the vow, made by Fil and her two nerdy best male friends so they’d always stick together, was a big deal at the time. Frankly, Fil wouldn’t know romance if it hit her in the face anyway. Her one true love is her job as the artist for the famous comic Girl from Mars. Just like the comic’s alien heroine, Fil’s never had or needed a love interest—just her best friends.

Until one of her friends breaks the vow and falls in love, bringing her smack back down to earth. Could it be that romance is in the stars for Fil after all?

My review: This book has the coolest cover ever! I love Julie Cohen’s books so thought I would go back and read some of her backlist, and this cover made it go straight to the top of the pile!

I loved this book, comic book designer Fil Brown is a heroine you can really get behind. She’s smart, independent, loyal to the point of self-sabotage and passionate about what she does. Her two friends since school/university Digger and Jim are her complete social network, so when a change in direction at work, the comic book publishing house where Girl from Mars is created occurs, Fil struggles to adapt. There’s so much about these characters I could get behind, especially the all night X-Files/Star Trek marathons, oh to have two friends that liked exactly the same things as you! Plus the resistance that Fil feels when her whole career takes a new direction and the adaptability she needs are things you can really relate to.

There are some really big themes here, don’t be fooled by the cover, that are handled really well, especially Digger’s storyline. Regarding the romance, I dont want to give anything away. I was really worried that this would be the age old cliche, but luckily I found that not to be the case. The right man won in the end in my opinion and it was touch and go until the last as to whether that would be the case! So pleased with how this book turned out, I loved it from the first to the very last page!

10 out of 10 stars! **********
